Image via WikipediaNews has it that Friendster is shutting down and we all have until May 31, 2011 to get all our important photos, blogs and whathaveyous from it. Then I remember I received an email from Friendster with the subject “Export Your Friendster data and information” on April 23rd but didn’t care to open (I have been ignoring notifications from it for the longest time). I opened it just now and tried to log in to my account. Unfortunately, I already forgot my password there. Has it been that long? I tried all possible passwords but to no avail. So, I just viewed my profile without logging in. The last activity was a comment/testimonial dated August 2, 2009, just a day after my birthday. I looked further and saw that I joined one of the pioneering social networking site on June 2003. Looked even further and saw that my last shoutout was “The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades” which was posted on December 24, 2007. I got 101 friends on my contact list. I have no more contact with most of them and I wonder how they are now.
After IRC, Friendster had been my second virtual community and I feel kind of guilty for not even being able to remember my password there. It is like turning my back and forgetting a place that was once my home and contributing to the closing down of that place; conceding to the now more popular Facebook. I don’t know the real score why it is shutting down, but it feels like it has accepted defeat and let Facebook win.
Maybe not really shutting down because it says on their letter "We are introducing a new and improved Friendster site in the coming weeks. As part of this change, we will remove a number of social networking functions in Friendster. This includes your existing account profile, photos, messages, blogs, and shoutouts. However, your list of friends will be preserved, along with your basic profile information." It's the profile and information of the members that the new owner has bought, methinks. Let's wait and see what Friendster is cooking for us in the weeks to come.
Anyway, I don’t think I have any data to save from Friendster so there’s no need to panic. Looking back, I actually had some bad memories there. Maybe, it’s really about time to let go and move on.
