Downtime

Blackout.Image via Wikipedia
You may have heard a lot of good things about working at the comfort of your home using the computer and internet connection.  Just like in any kind of work, it also has pros and cons.  Last week, I have experienced ‘downtime’ twice.  First, the virtual classroom that we use at work was down for the whole day. Then a few days later, Skype was down for a few hours.  In cases like these, it can’t be helped but to miss a few classes and be less productive.  Other situations that may cause downtime are power outages and no internet connection on my part.  I can’t help but be upset with our electric company and internet service providers whenever these things happen.

The ones that I dread the most are getting hacked and getting infected by a virus then lose important files.  I haven’t experienced them yet and I don’t ever want to.  I’d take downtime anytime rather than getting hacked or infected by a virus.

But I realize that having the downtime isn’t all that bad.  For people who have been working online day in and day out, it could be the way of the universe of telling them to pause for a while and smell the flowers; stand up and do some stretching; go out and take a walk; get some fresh air and some sunshine.  Downtime doesn’t really take a long time.  Everything goes back to normal after a while so nothing to fret about.  Just hope that there’s no urgent job that needs to be done when it happens.  And even if there’s one, there’s nothing we can do with fortuitous events.  So next time it happens again, I’ll just enjoy the unexpected rest instead of worrying too much.

PayPal: My Most Trusted Online Payment System

Hah!  The perks and benefits of being under the wings of my mentor Jomar Hilario!  He gives a lot of freebies to his students.   I was able to attend Paypal101 Ecommerce Hands-on Workshop yesterday, May 21, through his generosity.  Thanks Sir Jom!

Ms. Eireen Diokno-Bernardo with her staff
I’ve started to regularly use Paypal in 2008 but I feel there is still more to learn and explore.  I want to be able to tap the maximum potential of the tools that I use and this workshop is a perfect venue for me to learn more about Paypal.  The workshop was conducted by Ebay Power Seller Eireen Diokno-Bernardo (E-Commerce Education Specialist)  and Ken Tan from Paypal, one reason why this workshop is a must for every Paypal user.

PayPal's Ken Tan

There were many things covered in the workshop but my favorite was the lesson on how to create a Paypal button.  Ms. Eireen and Mr. Ken were able to shed light on many things about Paypal like Chargeback and Dispute, Account Restriction, Paypal Buyer Protection and other important things that most people are too lazy to read from Paypal website.  It was indeed an informative workshop about a very important tool that we use in the virtual world, our virtual wallet.

Ms. Eireen asked for some info from the participants before the said event and I’m glad that I have the things that they asked for.  Paypal Premier Account: checked.  Eon Cyber Account: checked.  So I felt I really belong to this event.  AND guess what!  I won a prize!  I don’t know the prize yet.  Ms. Eireen took the names and home addresses of the winners so she can send them the prize thru Xend Express.  I was lucky to be able to answer one of the questions.

Mr. Larry Gamboa of Think Rich Pinoy
After the workshop, I now feel more equipped in my chosen field.  But that doesn’t end there for I will continue to explore and discover new things that will help me improve.  I saw a lot of familiar faces during the event.  Some of them, I’ve already seen before like Jay Castillo of Foreclosure Philippines. Some I have known through the internet and saw them for the first time like Mr. Larry Gamboa of Think Rich Pinoy and Lynn Monsanto of UBUNTU Realty Philippines.  They don’t know me but I have always admired them.  Sir Jay looked nice and kind as always.  Ma’am Lynn smiled and said ‘Hi, Michelle’ to me even if she didn’t know me (we had nametags); though we used to correspond through email about a particular property.  And I can’t help but be starstruck by Sir Larry Gamboa who looked very kind with his ready smile.  It was indeed my lucky day.

Paypal-101 Hands-on Ecommerce Workshop was co-sponsored by Union Bank, Xend Express and Learning Curve Inc.  Ms. Eireen will continue to have this kind of workshop every month. The next one would be on June 18.  Click this for more details.

Online Shopping for Mother's Day Gift

I was in the middle of a busy day when I realized that Mother’s Day is fast approaching.  It is three days from now!  It falls on May 8.  It’s my sister’s birthday and she’s also a mom.   It’s definitely her day and she deserves a gift!  Well, of course, my mother, too.

But just like me, there are people who stay online all day long and rarely go out.  What do we do?  Yep, online shopping is what we do.  For the past years, the growth of online stores and online shoppers has been unstoppable.  In this day and age, you can buy just about anything in a click of a mouse right at the comfort of your home.

Online shopping is just one of the many activities that netizens do in the virtual world.  Most of the time, when we need something, we already know which online store to check.  In this case, we are celebrating Mother’s Day, so I want an ideal gift for women.

Online stores come in various platforms.  Some have their own websites, some are using free website platforms, and some are simply using Facebook Fanpage.  The following are the online stores that I have checked out.

I Love You Pearls

I Love You Pearls
When thinking of an ideal gift for women, jewelries come to mind first for most people.  I’ve always thought that pearls represent the femaledom amongst the many kinds of jewelries.  Gold, diamond, silver and the likes can be worn by men, but I don’t remember seeing a guy wearing pearls.  Pearls radiate its beauty even without manipulation.  No cutting or polishing needed.  It’s already a beauty at its simplest form.  It is also known as the only gemstone that grows inside a living organism.  Just like that special woman in your life, it is such a treasure.  Get this treasure at a very affordable price from I Love You Pearls.  You may also ‘like’ their Facebook Fanpage for more updates.

Baghooks from Pinkbaby18

Pinkbaby18
Pinkbaby18 offers a lot of girly accessories.  One of them is the bag-hook.  Fashionable and functional, a bag-hook is a must-have for every woman who is always on the go.  I’ve searched the net for this item and so far, it’s only in Pinkbaby18 where I have found very affordable bag-hooks without sacrificing the quality.

Beaded Accessories from Fashion and Me
Fashion and Me
This online store creates bead accessories by the hand.  You won’t believe your eyes when you see the price.  The accessories are nicely done at a very affordable price.  Please ‘like’ Fashion and Me on Facebook.

Have you noticed how many times I have mentioned the affordability and quality of the items?  It’s because I only want value for my hard-earned money.  And one more thing, I only go for trusted and reliable online stores.

The payment system varies with each online store.  Some accept payment through Paypal and credit cards.  Some accept bank deposits and money transfers.  The terms and conditions also vary, so make sure you read them before purchasing online.

It’s only 3 days to go before Mother’s Day and it may take time before the ordered item is delivered at your doorstep, but what the heck, it is better late than never.  And who doesn’t want to receive a gift whether it’s advance, on time or late.  After all, it’s the thought that counts.  Now get those fingers working and let’s go online shopping.
